Maths Through Sport for Primary Eduction
Active Learning has proved to be effective in engaging those pupils who under achieve with maths at various schools across the region and is proving to be a very popular intervention strategy.
The results speak for themselves! Following the delivery of a 36 week Active Learning programme, pupils confidence in maths increased by 87%.
Active learning is all about discovering, processing and applying. Research shows that pupils learn more when they are involved in Active Learning. When doing active learning, emphasis is placed on higher order thinking skills such as analysis, synthesis and evaluation.
Further research has shown that pupils retain 90% of what they say and do. Compare this with the fact that pupils retain just 10% of what they read and 20% of what they hear and you will start to understand why active learning is so important (source: E.Dale, 1969).
The Aspire Active Learning programme has been developed with this research in mind. Each session is planned to contain distinct active learning strategies which help boost your pupils maths levels through physical activity and sport. And with Aspire Sports providing reports on your pupils every term, you can track and monitor the quality of the programme as well as the progress of your pupils.

"Active Learning has been a total success. The children's self esteem and confidence has developed and this is now having an impact on their academic ability. As a result they have achieved their expected levels of ability" Carl Glasgow, Head Teacher |
Offering an alternative learning environment to the classroom, the programme has been developed with expert
consultancy from maths leaders at the leading schools in the West Midlands. The process has included pilot studies, testing and focus groups to ensure that your pupils improve as a result of the programme.
Active Learning is used by a lot of schools as a valuable second wave intervention strategy. It can be delivered during curricular time or as an extra-curricular club.
The programme has been developed to fit alongside the National Strategies document for securing Levels 2, 3 and 4 in maths. Each level has been split into 6 areas of maths. To support their learning, pupils will also complete a workbook, solve maths problems and reflect upon the skills they have learnt both in numeracy and sport. The workbooks allow Aspire staff and school teachers to monitor pupil's progress and identify areas of strength and weakness.
