Aspire to Cycle for Primary Schools

The Aspire to Cycle programme aims to develop your childrens' and young people's cycling skills in a fun yet safe environment through a variety of initiatives.

Balanceability

Has London 2012 inspired your pupils to get on their bikes and be the next Bradley Wiggins or Victoria Pendleton?

BalanceabilityIf so, give them a steer in the right direction through the new and exciting Balanceability programme.

Aimed at children aged 3 - 6, Balanceability helps your pupils make the transition from a balance bike to an ordinary pedal bike much easier in a safe, challenging but fun way. It focuses on fundamental bike skills, takes away the use of stabilisers and promotes the fundamental skill of cycling, which is balance.

By the end of the programme your children should have acquired the confidence to glide their bikes with their feet off the floor.

Delivered by staff who are certified to deliver the programme, Balanceability is a great way to enrich your curriculum and promote physical activity amongst your pupils.

Bikeability

Did you know that the Government want every child to be equipped with a Bikeability qualification by the time they leave primary school?

Aspire have been delivering a first class Bikeability programme since 2009. Over this period:

  • Schools reported that ALL children enjoyed the Bikeability provision
  • 100% of schools would recommend our provision to another school
  • ALL schools were completely satisfied with the overall service we provided to theml
  • More then 1,600 children have achieved Bikeability Level 1
  • In excess of1,400 children have achieved Bikeability Level 2

Bikeability gives children and young people the skills and confidence to ride their bikes safely on the road. Cycling is healthy and fun but it's necessary to learn how to do it safely.

"Aspire Sports have developed a course that is fun but never loses focus on safety. The course is accessible to all by providing a fleet of bikes that can be transported to any schools. Schools have been impressed with their ongoing communication, friendly nature, feedback and awards assemblies"   Neil Dawson, Wilson Stuart Active Society

To get their hands on a Bikeability award, your pupils will have to take part in the Government approved National Standard for Cycle Training.

  • Level 1 offers basic bike handling skills in a controlled environment away from roads
  • Level 2 teaches children to cycle planned routes on minor roads offering real cycling experience
  • Level 3 ensures cyclists are able to manage all traffic conditions

Aspire can offer you Level 1 and Level 2 provision that is tailored around your setting and pupils needs. We can deliver each level separately or combine both Level 1 and 2.

A Level 1 course can be delivered over two hours for up to 16 pupils and a Level 2 over six hours for up to 10 pupils. A combined course can accommodate up to 12 pupils at a time and can be delivered over four or two days.

The programmes are delivered from detailed planning and have key outcomes that must be achieved competently for each pupil to be rewarded with their badge and certificate.

Bikeability will equip your pupils with the necessary skills and knowledge needed to cycle safely throughout the rest of their life. Click here to read more about the Bikeability initiative or watch the video.

Aspire to Cycle Clubs

Aspire to Cycle clubs provide opportunities for further cycling development and participation for children and young people.

Aimed at pupils in Year 3 and above, an Aspire to Cycle club is a great way to learn how to ride correctly, improve technique in preparation for Bikeability or as a top up.

The clubs also benefit your school by:

"Aspire sports are reliable and professional. The children have thoroughly enjoyed the cycling programme training and as a result we have more riding to school"

Jackie Adams, Healthy Schools Co-ordinator

  • Bringing cycling to a wider range of young people
  • Meeting aspects of the 'Every Child Matters' agenda
  • Contributing to your schools 'green agenda'

Aspire to Cycle clubs provide high quality coaching activities, delivered in a traffic-free environment.

Sessions are run by our educators who are National Standard Instructor qualified. They hold an enhanced CRB disclosure as well as being trained with relevant first aid and child protection qualifications.

Your Aspire to Cycle club is tailored to suit your needs and can be run as an extra-curricular activity in conjunction with the Bikeability provision delivered in your school. With over one hundred different activities we guarantee that your pupils will be fully engaged in each session.

We provide your setting with all of the necessary resources and equipment to ensure that each session runs safely and smoothly. Your pupils are expected to bring their own bikes and helmets when participating. However, in some circumstances we can provide the bikes and necessary safety equipment for them.

Whatever your requirements, the workshops are sustainable and give your pupils more fun on their bikes – whether riding around with friends, learning some new tricks or even aiming for Olympic gold!

"A brilliant service run in a very professional manner. The instructors went out of their way to accommodate our needs. Our children loved the course and as a result have become more confident in riding their bikes to school" Mrs Atkins, PE Co-ordinator

Our workshops are aimed at getting more children and young people involved in cycling and provide high quality coaching, delivered in a traffic-free environment. Whilst each workshop is practical based the programme can be tailored to incorporate classroom elements should you wish.

Aspire to Cycle Workshops are flexible and adapted to suit your needs. There is a limit on how many children and young people we can work with at any one time. However, you can decide on how many sessions you require, how long we work with a group and what activities we focus on. We can even cater for your teaching staff should they wish to participate!

They are run by instructors who are National Standard Instructor qualified and hold other cycling qualifications. They possess an enhanced CRB disclosure as well as being trained with relevant first aid and child protection qualifications.

We provide your setting with all of the necessary resources and equipment to ensure that each workshop runs safely and smoothly. Your pupils are expected to bring their own bikes and helmets when participating. However, in some circumstances we can provide the bikes and necessary safety equipment for them.
