CONFIRMED: Primary PE and Sport Premium to continue for 2019-20
The Primary PE and Sport Premium is to continue at the doubled rate of £320 million for the 2019-20 academic year.
Confirmed by the Department for Education (DfE), the funding, first introduced in March 2013, will again be made available to schools to support the improvement of PE and sport provision.
Paul Griffiths, Director of Business Development at Aspire Sports, said:
“The recent Active Lives survey demonstrated that four million (56.8%) children and young people do not meet the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity a day. With physical inactivity at record levels, everyone at Aspire welcomes this announcement from DfE. It is imperative that schools utilise this funding appropriately by developing the knowledge, skills and confidence of their workforce. Teachers are not given anywhere near enough support during their initial teacher training and yet are expected to engage children in high quality physical education.
If we want our children to be physically active, they must be physically literate during the primary school years. Children who execute skills confidently are more likely to participate in competitive sport and engage in 60 minutes of physical activity each day.
We must also ensure that the whole school community understands the importance of PE, sport and activity. This includes Head Teachers, governors, pupils and their parents. We have an incredible opportunity to engage more children in physical activity and the industry must work together to help ensure the funding is spent appropriately and demonstrates clear outcomes for pupils.”
